“Happiness is a warm gun, bang bang shoot shoot”. If that’s true then the guys in Revolver ought to be quite happy, as we’re sure they are.
They have several things to be happy about. For one, all the members have full time day gigs so the pressure of creating sufficient income solely with a band is nonexistent. Like many local bands they play more for the thrills than to pay the bills. Maybe that’s why the band seems so laid back.
We walked into the Sidebar to check out Revolver recently. After a meet & greet with the owner we were treated to a behind the bar flaming flair show. Owner Derek Jones coaxed plenty of oohs and aahhs out of the nearly singed bar patrons with his pyro-bottle show. It was certainly cool as was the whole vibe of Sidebar.
All the while, Revolver was perched high atop Sidebar’s 4 foot tall stage just groovin’ to Marvin Gaye’s monumental hit “What’s Goin’ On. Now, that’s something you don’t see everyday. Usually some god awful Mustang Sally is spewing out the speakers with these casual pub bands. Revolver pulls together the taste and talent to pull off a bit different vibe than you might expect.
Much of the set list is past classic hits but all the set list is infused with a laid back vibe, almost a muted enthusiasm similar to a jazz band. All around interesting and quite cool. The crowd obviously gets into Revolver, Sidebar books them for back to back weekend nights.
We asked founding member and drummer Pat Douglas about the band:
“The band has taken many turns over the years, and I am the only founding member. First started around 2002 with me and a friend Steve Brun playing small duo and full band gigs together, but was never anything serious, and came up with the name of the band “Revolver” as we had a “revolving door” of musicians that we played with. It was kind of a joke at the time, but the name sort of stuck, and we have kept the name ever since.
The current line up in the band has been together for going on two years now. We have developed a pretty strong bond as a band, and have grown together musically over this time. There are no egos to deal with this group has one goal, and that is to have fun playing music, and entertain people at the same time. Simple as that!”
Pat also explained the bands unusual set list:
“We play a little bit of everything. We try to pick songs that you don’t hear other bands play, but are recognized by everyone. We like to mix the genre’s in our sets, we may play a Marvin Gaye song, and then play a Led Zeppelin song right after, or Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello. We have a broad range of genre’s that we cover. We gauge the crowd to see what they are more responsive to, so if we have a younger crowd then we can play more modern stuff, and if the crowd wants to hear more blues we can adjust the set for that as well. We also add more and more songs to keep our music fresh”.
