Eastside Vibe Review
When we came in Petes the owner (Pete) told us proudly he has the “best hoagie in town”. Anybody that tells me that has my interest buddy...that’s a fact!
Hoagies are an American creation and date back to the early Italian immigrant workers on the East Coast. I’ll skip the history lesson and get straight to the facts. Hoagies are damn good. Some call them grinders or toasted subs. Some even call them gyros but they’re totally wrong. A gyro is definitely not a hoagie. Hoagies around here are usually pizza or mushroom and served with cheese and pizza sauce. I’ll accept that grinders and toasted subs are hoagies but gyros...well that’s just silly.
We ordered up a side of loaded fries ($6.99) with our traditional steak hoagie ($4.95) and a chicken quesadilla ($7.99). Pete also told us he has the best quesadillas in town. I think he may have even said the same about the loaded fries as well. Pete believes in his quality when it comes to his favorite menu selections that’s for sure.
Pete’s quesadilla was a compilation of grilled chicken breast, banana peppers, onions, tomatoes, spices and cheese. The fact that they char-grill the chicken to order is pretty cool. Most places get it out of a bag pre-seasoned and pre-cooked. Pete then lightly toasts the tortilla on the flat top and serves it with sour cream. Pretty primo.
Our loaded fries were an entire plate of crinkle cuts smothered with nacho cheese and bacon. Fresh bacon. It too comes served with sour cream. Big portions and mega ounces of cheese make this dish a winner every time.
Pete’s hoagie...well it did have a crispy toasted bun...it did have a thick layer of melted provolone cheese...it came complete with onions, pizza sauce and banana peppers. It was definitely pretty,
but is it the best in town? Maybe, just maybe.
I am so hoagie inspired we are doing a first ever “Eastside Hoagie Showdown” next month. Every hoagie in town, three independent judges, and our camera. Pete is certain to be there. Whether or not he wins is not up to us but we’ll be rooting for him. With so many hoagies to choose from here on the Eastside it’s hard to say who will come out on top. However, you can rest assured the winner will have some serious bragging rights until next years event.
We wish we could judge it just so we could taste them all but that wouldn’t really be fair. After all, we have our favorites and we know what they look like. This event will be judged by pure unbiased random Eastside hoagie fans. If you love hoagies and think you should be a judge just e-mail us at
contactus@eastsidevibe.net We’ll pick three winners and throw in a few gift certificates so they can enjoy a couple hoagies on us. Until then feel free to get some practice judging at Pete’s or wherever you like. Personally I’d rather stick to eating at the pubs with live bands and a full bar.
Pete’s is now featuring live bands and has doubled the size of the building to house the dance floor and more dining tables. You can check out the band line-up and the specials in our Bar Guide section (in the centerfold).
or online at www.eastsidevibe.com in our Pubs section.
If you think your favorite local hoagie joint is better than Pete’s go up and give his a try. You might be surprised.
