The pub biz is a tough mutha to master. All across the city people with no experience and a little cash proudly paint their name on the sign of some defunct badly beaten bar & grill.
They all think they possess some secret recipe to success, before they open a pub that is. 5 years later, most likely they’d sell that bitch for half what they have in it, and feel like a hustler to get that. Another desperado with of couple borrowed bucks will take their place and the cycle goes round and round, year after year, decade after decade. The name keeps changing but the song remains the same.
Every now and then you come across one that has what it takes to buck the odds. Someone with a solid, honest, simple concept. Terry’s Turf Club for example. Terry had a vision (a nearly blinding vision) and it worked. Terry’s should be around for decades. There are a few other examples as well, but few is the key word. Rick Eggleton who just opened “My Brother’s Place” just may have a similar simple recipe for success.
My Brother’s Place is in a good spot, Batavia (by the hospital). Yeah I know Batavia looks about as lively as a heroin addict 24 minutes after a score. Fast food goes out of business there, freakin’ Kroger went of business there. Kroger! But there are huge newer neighborhoods on the hills with hundreds of residents and it’s growing as we speak. My Brother’s Place is a sweet spot for the pub’s concept, family oriented food & fun. With a capitol F in Family.
Yes, there is a bar, yes it’s well stocked, there’s even a Happy Hour from 11-9 daily. Yes this is a place to kick back with a beer, no, this is not a place to kick someone in the back over a beer. Everyone is welcomed in but not everyone is welcome back, act a fool and go on down the road. What? No trash talkin’ redneck psyco-billy Bob kickin’ mud off his boots at the bar? Never. No chain smokin’ leather faced hag hiding from her 3rd husband trying to get a cold PBR for a sweaty Percocet? Certainly not. My Brother’s Place is owned and operated by an honorable man, a once Batavia football coach. A guy who lost a good job, and decided to place his bet on the pub card, set up shop in his beloved Batavia. With a little help from siblings (hence the name) My Brother’s Place was born.
The concept is so simple you’ll not be impressed by my description. Nevertheless listen up. The pub’s grub bests many so called family restaurants (Momma’s Grill for instance). Pizza, sandwiches, burgers, wings, daily specials, salads and soups. Sounds like your typical menu involving your typical day dream right? It would be if the food was the same old Sam’s Club horsesh!t like you see everyday. Handmade pizza dough is stretched, topped liberally and comes out browned but all soft and pillowy on the inside. Italian sub sandwiches are layered with high dollar meats, peppery pastrami, stacked thicker than you’d expect to see, sporting an obviously fresh baked bun, melted cheese sliding off the edges. “We do everything that Penn Station does... the French bread, the Philly Cheese Steak. We offer them in our 10 minute lunch specials... people love them”.
There is a “Wild Wings” next door. They probably think they’re the wing king too, but I bet they’d walk away #2 if we put on a neighborly wing competition with the nurses as judges in the adjacent Clermont Mercy Hospital. Big meaty wings always beat puny pigeon wings people. Same scenario with the burgers. It’s all bigger and it’s damn sure all better.
It’s not all been easy either. “We’ve already changed the menu a lot.. we’ve consolidated the menu down to the most popular items”. It still comes off quite expansive for a pub if you ask me. Before you ask for that menu though ask “What you got on special”. Rick sticks to the word’s true meaning: distinguished by some unusual quality; being in some way superior. Hunkin’ homemade, fresh ingredient dishes at drive thru combo meal prices, and to the table in less than 10 minutes at lunch time.
Dinner specials are always found as well. But I bet they don’t serve many on Thursdays. That’s “Steak Night”. Sirloin, ribeye and filet rotate weekly, served with a baker and a salad for $12-14 people already dig it. “I sell out, every one... people have responded really well to Steak Night”. See how easy it is? Don’t serve Sam’s Crap = customers come back. Simple. Think of this place as a restaurant with a bar. Arguably the best restaurant in the surrounding area.
On Many Friday nights, Batavia Football rules the roost. The Bulldogs reign supreme here there’s even a big Bulldog’s mural on the patio. It’s family dinners followed by drinks with friends. Two Saturdays a month Soul Pushers play acoustic, people chill on the big covered patio, deer cruise through the back 40 and stare right at you. Small town Saturday night (without the fights).
Well, you’ve read it all and I bet your still not convinced. So go see for yourself, if you’re a resident of either Batavia, Williamsburg or Owensville My Brothers Place is a must try. If you’re working in the area and considering consuming any of that fast food on the hill for lunch, pause and reconsider, you know what those clowns are going to serve you, At My Brother’s Place you’ll get something special.
One thing I almost forgot, My Brother’s Place serves fried wings, even if you’re a die hard fan of fried wings grilled wings are a must try. So is the awesome all purpose MBP sauce.

Rick is wonderful I don't care what we ask for he makes it just the way we want. The staff is fun and friendly. Thumbs up for me.
