Eastside Vibe Review

Wendys Isn’t The Only Place Serving Till 1am!

Answer me one thing. How does a Wendys make thousands a day serving up machine made monotony when they are situated almost next door to a quaint little pub that dishes out the good stuff? Who in their right mind would drive up to a window and be handed out some stink in bag and never give a thought to what they are eating let alone what they are missing out on? Fools.

Just down the ditch from the Montgomery Wendys (275/Montgomery) sits the Montgomery Town Tavern (commonly known as MTT’s). This place is a little slice of Irish Pub pie in a plaza. No it’s not Irish themed... it’s just Irish at heart. Irish people see the pub a bit differently than we do. To them it’s the center of civilization. It’s where you network and find a job, a painter, a date and of course a pint. You might even find your grandpa & grandma there as well. It’s an extended living room to the community. A place for gathering, socializing, growing old, growing wiser, a reception for marriage and your passing on. Not to mention a place to get a damn good meal.
Most Irish pubs are still sticking to the quintessential “grandmas recipe” style of traditional cooking. MTT’s certainly follows suit there.
The only real difference is the lady (Joni Paul) doing all the cooking isn’t quite a grandma just yet. She’s an ex-nurse who’s family has shared a long history of patronizing as well as heading up the helm at MTT’s for decades.
Joni believes in feeding her patrons like grandma feeds out of town kin at Sunday dinner. She’s in the back stirring in lots of love into every ounce of gravy and every slab of meatloaf. For instance every day she puts a daily lunch special on the blackboard. From 11-3 $6.25 buys you a plate and a smile. One day it might be country fried chicken smothered in gravy with mashed potatoes and green beans... real slow cooked beans, gravy made from scratch and lots of the afore mentioned love. The next day it’ll be hand battered cod or meat loaf with mac & cheese. The list goes on and on. Don’t get me wrong, she has lots of items straight off the menu that the patrons crave as well.

Thing is, MTT’s is next door to Holzman Deli
(purveyors of fine meats and such). The relationship she shares works well to her advantage. Instead of buying frozen chubbed mystery beef she gets the fresh ground sirloin and other premium hand picked cuts. This meat passed under many a-nose prior to landing on her grill.
Now if that don’t beat any fast food joint, you live in another world than me my friend.
You can rest assured your getting top quality cooking for the same “combo” price the junk joints have to offer.
Instead of a greasy “biggie fry” you’ll get a bowl of scratch made soup or chili to go along side of your burger or Italian hoagie (a favorite with MTT diners). Looking for a side salad? Joni’s ripping up the lettuce herself and she even makes the ranch. “I like Whitey’s sliders” you say. MTT’s has their very own itty bitty cheeseburgers and it would be a sin to call them sliders.
If that ain’t reason enough to eat at the tavern your always welcome to order a fresh draft with that burger and you’ll never see that on the marque at Wendys. If you still think the “dollar menu” is a pretty pound for your pennies check out this fish & chips basket. That’s a man’s meal. If you still need convincing just think about how all your cash is going to Joni and the good folks at MTT’s instead of to Dave’s kids who don’t need it anyway. Pub grub people... think pub grub. It’s good for you, it’s good for Montgomery and maybe more importantly it’s just all around good eat’n.
