Eating cheap for lunch is easy. Eating a cheap dinner is hard. Sure you can buy the cheap quality commercial junk, but if you’re looking for a chef made, quality dinner, you expect to pay a lot more.
The Iron Skillet in Newtown is a true German Restaurant. Many authentic German dishes are offered on their extensive dinner menu. What they also offer is a great 2 for 1 dinner special. Every Tuesday you can order two entree’s (from a limited menu) for the price of 1. We stopped by to check out the fare at this only to fair price.
The first entree on the “limited” menu caught my eye, German Meatloaf with potatoes (scalloped or mashed) or green beans, served with a side of hot or cold slaw and fresh rolls.
First they brought out the hot slaw; Fresh cabbage in a vinegar base topped with bacon. If you have never tried it you will be pleasantly surprised...it’s delicious and unusual. While waiting for the meatloaf I nibbled on a hot roll. Nothing unusual about that...until you try the butter. Creamy (maybe mixed with a little cream cheese), sprinkled with Paprika, it was a savory twist to the norm.
At last the entree arrived. Meatloaf, fresh made and served with a tomato based sauce or brown gravy. I chose the gravy and scalloped potatoes. They were definetly fresh made and baked to perfection. Everything was great!
1 drink, 2 meals, great service and still the bill came in at $16. . I must note a $3. gratuity was added to the check
