Holly Spears
Bare feet; soulful voice; passionate musician… meet Holly Spears. From the foot hills of West Virginia, Holly moved fearlessly to “the City” in pursuit of her dream to be a singer. In Cincinnati, OH Holly worked with Eliot Sloan of “Blessid Union of Souls” on developing her craft of singing and songwriting. She toured with Blessid Union several times, opened for The Spin Doctors; Gin Blossoms; Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds) and many fantastic local bands through out West Virginia, Indiana, and Kentucky. Her music has been shared in places across the board from her church; the internet; multiple radio stations; local television shows; to MTV, MTV2 and VH1 in the background of “Making the Video.” Holly’s life turnaround (saved by grace) and continual lessons learned are shared and poured out through her music. Her energy and passionate expression will keep you in each moment right along with her. From lost with out direction to saved; restored; and back on Redemption Road, one thing has remained the same – Holly. Loves. To. Sing!
Infact, Holly has LOVED music since she was just a little girl growing up in the small town of Wana, West Virginia. She began her musical adventures in the choir right next to her dad, holding on to his leg at Church. Then, in elementary school, she sang the lead in her school’s choir multiple times and out learned her piano teacher. Holly’s voice was featured in many musicals; choir performances; fairs and festivals, and other venues through out high school. During her teenage years she taught herself how to play guitar; interned at the local radio station, 102 WVAQ out of Morgantown, WV and was in two local rock bands.
Holly met Blessid Union of Souls through her internship at WVAQ. Eliot Sloan (lead singer) asked her to send him a demo, which she recorded at the radio station. Sloan bussed or flew her to Cincinnati a handful of times to help develop her song writing skills and to record a more professional demo. He also moved her to the big city (in her eyes) of Cincinnati, OH the summer after she graduated from Clay Battelle High School to work with her on a more consistant basis in 2000. Living in Cincinnati now, she went to college for Audio/ Video Production at Southern Ohio College (now Brown Mackie). Spears worked with Eliot on and off through out the years, as well as had many forms of the “Holly Spears” band.
Then, in 2006/2007 Holly’s relationship with God got rekindled and her life did quite the 180. She still played locally in Cincinnati and some in WV while visiting family, but for the most part she stopped focusing on a music career and started focusing on what God was doing inside her. She accepted a part time job at Crossroads (a large inter-denominational church in Cincinnati) in their Music Ministry department for kids and teenagers. God was doing so many changes in Holly’s character and the renewing of her soul. Since then, God threw Holly back out of the nest of working in the constant comfort of being surrounded by her loving co-workers in the safety of working in a church environment. He wanted Holly to go back out into the world to SING and simply be herself! He wants her to now walk boldly in who He created her to be. So, now Holly is embracing the freedom of being this new creation. Holly Spears, daughter of the God who created the world – out in the world singing what’s on her heart and being who God created her to be. Now that’s freedom!

Reviews

The latest release from Holly Spears just goes to prove this city is rich with talented musicians. You just have to look between the cracks. You’d never know it by listening to Clear Channel’s slew of stations but great artists are all around us in all forms and styles.
Take Holly spears for instance. Normally we rant and rave about the bands that can thrash, crash and tear the stage down. Here we have a CD release that’s more at home on WNKU than on WEBN. And that’s a good thing, NKU might actually play her work whereas we’ll never hear a local Cincy band on EBN.
Holly Spears reflects an honesty and intelligence in her music. It is contemporary Christian pop to be certain, yet it retains a modern folk music appeal that would attract any local folk/acoustic music lover, Christian or not. This is the first Christian music CD we’ve had the chance to review and I’m not well versed on the who’s who in the genre. However based purely on the singer songwriter quality this little lady has her act together.
Holly Spears’s work is more a self reflective appreciation for her faith than the “spiritual sales based” marketing approach you’ll find with much so called Christian music. She’s heavily talented in both her song writing ability and her instrumental prowess. Holly’s singing about her appreciation for the healing she has experienced from her faith, she’s not singing to inspire you to join her faith. That’s what I really appreciate.
The entire disc is well produced and I feel any fan of WNKU’s brand of modern folk/acoustic would welcome this disc to their collection. It’s just good music and that’s good enough for me.
