Players...the Beechmont players that is
If you haven’t heard of The Beechmont Players by now you probably
think all good actors are on the big black box in front of your couch. If
not and you dig live theatre but you thought you had to travel downtown (and
pay to park, hide your purse and escort your guests with a 9mm in hand) to
the Aronoff Center to see a great play you have been missing out my friend.
Our very own Eastside has been home to the lovely and talented Beechmont Players
for 10 years now. The Players put on a wide variety of plays from Broadway hits
to their own creations in an effort to entertain the Eastsiders who long for
a great live show in the comfort of an Eastside locale.
If you have never even been to a play and maybe never thought you would either,
I urge you to give this experience a go! I realize most people jump straight
to the “dinner and a movie” mode of thinking when an opportunity
arrives to go out and have a good time.
However consider this... first of all most every movie showing at the cinema
now a days sucks. You get the same old re-hashed plot lines like action films
where the heros never get hurt or even maimed (even though they are repeatedly
blown up, shot, stabbed and beaten to a bloody pulp). Yeah you’ve seen
a few of those. Then you have the romantic comedies that are neither funny
nor romantic but rather a long drawn out plot line of boy meets girl... boy
likes girl (or vice versa)... boy goes out with girl... boy makes girl mad...
girl breaks up... and a finally a back together forever ending. BORING even
for the girls!
Of course you have the current fancy of the Hollywood Cretans, the bloodbath
horror film. Usually this is a two hour film with no discernible plot other
then the maniac is coming... he has just sliced, carved and eaten the secondary
actor... now he’s coming again... now he’s freaking out... now he’s
killed everyone but the star... now he’s dead... or is he? They always
leave room for the sequel, or should I say sequels.
Now and then there’s a decent effort but still, most everything out there
is crap, and it’s getting worse.
If you want to take your date out to something a lot more interesting then
head to the theater, the live theater. New Yorkers have known for decades
that the live theater is an awesome way of getting a great evening out for
a bargain. The shows up there are packed nightly and the cinemas are left
to the tasteless and the critics. The Beechmont Players are a little slice
of the Big Apple right here in our very own Eastside backyard. What makes
it even better is that almost all of the actors are from the Eastside. These
folks are not some half assed “maybe
I’ll try acting” amateurs either. They are solid actors who are fine
tuning every production to perfection. You’ll be amazed at the comedy,
the drama, the set design, the directing not to mention the sound and lighting.
It’s just what you’d expect from a really good Broadway play
in NYC (for a fraction of the price I might add). Good plays in NYC or even
at the Aronoff can easily set you back $100 and more. The Players February
production of Grease sold for $10 a ticket. $10 people!
If you really liked “Snakes on a Plane” or “The Break Up” you
live a sad pathetic life, and you are in dire need of expanding your horizons.
I can think of no better way than get your butt down to the play. It’s
culture, it’s genuine fun, it’s close and it’s cheap. Not
to mention a very impressive suggestion for a first date. For more information
