Local sports teams have loyal fans and fierce competitors. This is also true
of local sports bars. In this issue our home team Sports Page Cafe takes
on the Downtown team rivals Game Day Cafe. This competition turned out to
be a “double header” as the first time I went to Game Day there
was actually a game and nowhere to park (under $10), a serious foul right
off the bat. After a time out I went back to see Game Day in action. Bright,
modern, clean and LCD T.V.’s galore. I liked the lineup. I sat at the
big circular bar and went straight for the specials...or “special” as
it turned out, ($2 domestic bottles). No food deals for Happy Hour, strike
two. Oh well $6.50 for 10 wings wasn’t bad, even at full price at least
it was first base. The wings were the MVP of the play. True Buffalo sauce
and crisp deep fried wings served with carrots, celery and bleu cheese. I
added ranch to pinch hit for the bleu cheese for 50 cents extra (error).
Game day looked good on the field but came up short of a home run.
In the second inning Sports Page Cafe came up to bat. Free parking, they
looked good but looks ain’t everything. I pitched a fast “what’s the
drink special” at the server, she drove it hard right down the middle with
$2, 20oz drafts or $1.75 bottles (score for sports page). Returning with the
beer I threw her a curve with “what’s the the food specials” and
once again Bam! Home run! Wings, fried ravioli or a sampler your choice for $3.99
(Monday and Thursday’s .35 wings). Score again for the Sports Page.
Proud of the home teams good show I ate my wings with delight.
After the game the DJ fixes up about 10,000 watts and the girls start dancing.
Talk about scoring a home run. All said and and done Sports page Cafe 2 Game
Day Cafe 0. We ought to put these two on a softball field and give Game Day
one more chance at victory to save face. Still, my money would be on the
home team Sports Page Cafe. With sweet drink specials, sweet food deals and
ever sweeter pretty ladies on the dance floor they have their bases loaded.
