BEST OF THE EASTSIDE 2008 READER’S PICKS
Be sure to leave a comment on the bottom of any page.
BEST ITALIAN
Olive Garden
All Locations
Well there you have it. The masses have spoke and I guess the masses must love mass produced frozen food. I guess this kind of thinking is one of the reasons DeMeos just closed. Dom’s Italian dishes were all handmade and smothered in marinara made that morning. Yet still people automaticly think “Olive Garden” when they think Italian. That’s sad.
BEST MEXICAN
Acapulco
985 Lila Ave, Milford 831-4661
Habla espanol... si. Habla authentic Mexicano tacos, flautas or sopes... no. Habla gringo grub... yes. Decent Americanized Mexican.
BEST SOUTHWESTERN
El Coyote
7404 State Road 232-5757
They have had their ups & downs, but they are still around and now they are even on top. Next time your in there tell them they should put those famous “BOGO” coupons on our site for all those hundreds of EV readers that voted them #1.
BEST INDIAN
Royal Taj
7711 Beechmont Ave. 231-0500
Anderson has embraced this Indian eatery and it’s easy to see why. Lamb Vindaloo for one. Goat Curry for two. Couples should try the Vegetarian (or non) Thal, it’s a dinner for two served on a silver platter... it even feels royal.

BEST AMERICAN
Latitudes Cafe Downtown (Pictured)
Both locations Milford 831-9888 and Anderson Town Center 233-9888
This one was a surprise. American tapas really is what they serve, however it’s still surprising to see them win in the “Best American” category. They are the best indeed at many things so we have to go along with the crowd on this one. Dan and the boys, ya’ll are shining bright.
They also serve the best sushi this side of Nagasaki, let alone the Anderson area.
BEST TRADITIONAL
Bob Evans
“Down on the Farm” I wonder, do they grow their own MSG or do they buy it from the Chinese like everybody else.
BEST PIZZA (Beechmont area)
Garzelli’s Grinder & Pizza Co.
637 Ohio Pike 947-9000
They did it again. A fine example of a family opening a franchise restaurant (2 actually) while still incorporating their own mom & pop standards. It’s been the secret ingredient in their recipe for success... and perhaps even the sauce as well.
BEST VEGGIE
The Veg Head
920 B Loveland Maderia Rd.
Loveland 697-7090
Now who did you think was going to win? Not only does nobody do veggie like the Veg Head... nobody even does all organic veggie at all. From the carton to the compost it all comes full circle here. This place is 20 years ahead of it’s time and credits it all to 30 year old idealism.
BEST CHINESE
Great China
834 Ohio Pike
It may be good Chinese, but it’s no Rong Tans.
BEST BBQ
Smokey Bones
509 Ohio Pike, Cincinnati 528-1725
2nd year in a row. The only corporate place that sells really good BBQ. My only complaint is they changed their sauces. Now I have to bring my own. Bring back the OG BBQ sauce!
BEST HOAGIE
Garzelli’s Grinder & Pizza Co.
637 Ohio Pike 947-9000
Again with Garzelli’s! They say grinder, we say hoagie, either way it’s a crowd pleaser. Check out the coupons on our site.
BEST WRAPS
The Veg Head
920 B Loveland Maderia Rd.
Loveland 697-7090
Not everyone does all organic veggie but, everyone does do wraps and still the Veg Head came out on top against the competition.
They should have won best Za as well. Who else has ever figured out how to make pizza a health food. That ought to count for something!
BEST BURGER
Maloneys Pub East
7660 Beechmont Ave. Anderson 232-8484 & Terry’s Turf Club 4618 Eastern Ave. 533-4222
A two way tie! Maloneys is damn near famous for their beefy burgers BOGO or not. Now Terry’s is fast becoming famous for their big beautiful burgers as well. They both deserve it. Finally someone has toppled Zips off their throne and took the top spot in the city for serving fine beef burgers. It’s about time someone zapped Zips crown. We never got it to begin with.
BEST GYRO
Buffalo Wings & Rings
After people see the gyro video we posted on Mediterranean Cafe’s web page I doubt anyone will think processed gyro meat could ever really be the best again. Check it out it’s the real deal! www.eastsidevibe.com
BEST CHINESE BUFFET
China Buffet
4394 Eastgate Square Dr. # 1300 943-7555
Huge selection and cheap prices keep people coming back. The fresh Lo Mein grill really sets them apart.

BEST INDIAN BUFFET
Indian Oven 7397 Main St. Newtown
561-7444 (Pictured)
The daily lunch buffet is not only beautiful it’s cheap, at $6.59 it’s the cheapest in town. Look for the goat and lamb dishes they offer this month. That’s truly authentic. Veg heads and carnivores alike will delight in their buffet.
BEST BURRITO
Chipotle
All Locations
Snotty, snooty and surly has been the only serving experience we have ever had here. Moe’s Southwest Grill is better, bigger and has much more friendly burrito masters.
Sleepy Hollow serves fine burritos (and fajitas) as well. Who’d have thunk it?
BEST BREAKFAST
Bob Evans
Unbelievable. We never knew we had so many elderly readers! Maybe we should solicit Depends for advertising. The Country Inn still reigns king to us. Cincy goetta, mmmm good.
BEST RIBS
Smokey Bones
509 Ohio Pike, Cincinnati - 528-1725
Like we said before, excellent smoked meat, the top sauces got canned a while back though.
Now we have to sneak in our own (Famous Dave’s Devils Spit) Sleepy Hollow still takes top spot in our book. Fat slabs, friendly service and no sneaking in sauce required.
BEST WINGS
Buffalo Wings & Rings
They just keep on pulling out in front folks, what can we say? Decent gyros as well. Bigger wings than BW3’s too.
BEST CHILI
Skyline
This merits an EV chili showdown. Lets put Skyline, Gold Star, Empress, Moonlight, Country Inn, Main St. Cafe and everyone else who serves Cincy chili to the test. Look for it real soon. Interested in judging? E-mail us why we should include you too!
BEST ICE CREAM
Coldstone Creamery
7426 Beechmont Avenue 624-0299
The creamiest of creameries to be sure! They give Graeters a run for their money and make UDF look like Save-A-Lot $1 a gallon special ice cream food product. Seriously.
BEST BAKERY
Busken’s Bakery
Just what is a “Busken” anyway? An old Cincy fave, they’ve made some dough in the bread biz over the years, that’s for sure.
BEST PLACE TO TAKE KIDS
Chuck E. Cheese’s
4394 Eastgate Square Dr. 900 752-8188
That’s just too cheesy. Why not take the tots to a casino... it would end up being cheaper.
BEST MALE SERVER
Tim McDonald
Garzelli’s Grinder & Pizza Co.
637 Ohio Pike 947-9000
Part of the family team that runs Garzellis so well.
BEST FEMALE SERVER
Becky from Applebees in Eastgate
4440 Glen Este-Withamsville Rd. 752-0700
Oh Becky dear Becky your praises they sing, so graceful and lovely, so sweet your voice rings, but when you clock in tomorrow tell the boss you must flee, for no one should work for a corporate queen like Applebees! Don’t forget who led the Ohio smoking ban people.
BEST CHEF
Danny Starkins
Latitudes Cafe Anderson Town Center 233-
9888
Talented, driven and dedicated. Don’t believe it... check out the Top Eastside Chef Battle video on Latitudes web page! You’ll see exactly what makes this chef special.
BEST PLACE TO EAT AFTER MIDNIGHT
White Castle
$10 a bag and they almost never mess up your order! For a real treat try it sober sometime.
BEST PUB GRUB
Anderson Bar & Grill
8060 Beechmont Ave. 474-2212
ABG, King of all things fish sandwich, karaoke (Anderson Idol) and Monday night football. Not to mention the bands, the bar and the sexy staff!
BEST NEIGHBORHOOD BAR
The Lounge and Pete’s Cafe
Pete’s Cafe 1220 St. Rt. 28 Milford 575-2150
Pete proudly claims he has the “Best Hoagie in Town.” If you don’t like hoagies he has a decent menu to choose from. Pete’s also has live bands on the weekends, usually cool southern rock bands.
The Lounge 7740 Beechmont Ave. 231-2401
Anderson’s neighborhood Cheers if you will.
There is always something going on at the Lounge. Birthday parties, game nights, karaoke, live bands and free appetizers are usually abound. A testament to the true meaning of neighborhood pub. Owned and operated entirely by ladies, the pub has the warmth of a “woman’s touch”.
BEST PUB
KC’s Pub
921 State Route 28 Milford 248-0358
K.C’s is in it to win it. Cool bands, cheap drinks, free food (oops that’s a secret) and a brand new patio too. K.C’s is known for featuring many great bands before other bars get em’
BEST BAR IMPROVEMENT
J & B Tavern
4056 Mt. Carmel Tobasco Road 688-0000
This bar makes every effort to provide what the people really want. Great bands, good food, year round smoking patio with speakers, heaters and t.v’s, cheap specials and promotions and they are still always looking for even more ways to please. I guess it falls into the “improvement” category because of the past owners (Jack Carey) idiotic attempt to run a bar. People even thought Jack had ruined the bar’s image so badly a new owner could never overcome the stigma! Well, J&B’s has proved that Jack’s Regional Connection Cafe stigma is nothing more than a joke among the locals, even all the unpaid vendors look back and laugh (well sort of) now. J&B’s is rockin’ & rollin’ again for the first time in a long time.
BEST DJ
DJ Ghost
Sports Page Cafe
453 Old state Route 74
Mt. Carmel 688-1009
Ghost must have really rallied the troops for this one, he won it by a landslide. You need to go to the Sports Page to catch Ghost’s groove.
BEST PROMOTIONS
Celebrity Status Entertainment
Sports Page Cafe
453 Old state Route 74
Mt. Carmel 688-1009
The Sports Page folks are always putting on a party. I guess the proof is in the promotion.
BEST PLACE TO SEE BANDS
Rhino’s Bar & Grill
792 Eastgate South Drive 752-1800
Still the king of band bars.
BEST DANCE BAR
Sports Page Cafe
453 Old state Route 74
Mt. Carmel 688-1009
Bet ya’ didn’t see that one coming! Of course you did. Naughty School Girl contests, Jel-O wrestling, Wet-T, and Best DJ. Ladies shake your booty and blast your bombs just don’t tell mommie where her little darling likes to dance!
BEST KARAOKE
Lebos 5869 Kellogg Ave. 232-1763
Having karaoke everyday and night for decades will insure you win this category every time. Lebos is famous for their karaoke (and now their jambalaya too ) and competition gets pretty serious. Shannon the MC keeps it cool. What’s with East End and karaoke? Both Tostados and Lebos repeatedly win best karaoke awards from all over the city. Looks like East End is still karaoke king.
BEST KARAOKE HOST
Kara at Adis Place
7925 Beechmont Ave 474-4122
I think “Karaoke Todd” would beg to differ. If cars in the parking lot and asses in seats counted for votes, ABG would crush them.
BEST OPEN MIC
Mama Vitas
6405 Branch-Hill Guinea Road - Loveland, 697-9705
Well, at least there best at something!
BEST OPEN MIC HOST
DJ Ghost
Sports Page Cafe
453 Old State Route 74
Mt. Carmel 688-1009
We never knew Sports Page even had an open mic night! Go figure.
BEST NEW BAR
Buffalo Harrys
1001 Lila Ave. Milford 831-6307
Buffalo Harry’s gives new meaning to the old song “Buffalo gal won’t you come out tonight, won’t you come out tonight, won’t you come out tonight...” She’s coming out alright and she’s bringing about 227 hot friends with her! It seems like the girls always out number the guys at this all new, all country bar. It must be the bull rides. Best country bands in the Tri-State.
BEST DIVE BAR
The Lake
903 Old State Rt. 74. 753-4986
Open daily at 5:30 AM, now who else can say that! It’s old, it’s dark, it’s dank and it’s famous. Many a good times have been had here.
BEST PLACE TO HOOK UP
Hooters
595 Ohio Pike Withamsville 943-0021
This was a weird one. Hooters and hooking
up just doesn’t sound right. But we’ll take your word for it. Sounds like Hooters has a few servers that really work for that tip ehh?. Maybe it’s worth another look see after all.
BEST PLACE TO TAKE A DATE
Latitudes Cafe Downtown Milford 831-9888 & Latitudes Cafe Anderson Town Center 233-9888
Good choice. Cool cosmo atmosphere, loud enough to party, quiet enough to make conversation and the music & food will get anyone in the mood. If all else fails Sammy’s cocktails will get you both good and juiced.
BEST JUKEBOX
Gateway Inn
US 50
Little known bar out off 50. Cool little place a lot like the Lake (Jamies). Laid back and local friendly.
BEST MALE BARTENDER
Jeff Bates
Sports Page Cafe
453 Old state Route 74
Mt. Carmel 688-1009
He can hang with the best of them!
BEST FEMALE BARTENDER
Tina from Pair-A-Dice
1607 St Rt 28 Goshen 722-9033
and Lisa from Mt. Carmel Pub
4501 Mt. Carmel Tobasco 528-9974
There’s a lot of sexy beer slingers out there so kudos to you ladies!
BEST BOUNCER
Ty Stewart
Sports Page
Good goin’ TY!
BEST PLACE TO PLAY GAMES
BW3’s
Yeah and the cider rules too.
BEST PLACE TO RELAX
Lebo’s, River Canoe & Kayak, Latitudes and The Lounge all tied for this category.
BEST PATIO
Quaker Steak & Lube
590 Chamber Drive, Milford 831-5823
BEST STAFF
Bad Habitz
1296 State Route 28 Milford 722-1700
What good is a great pub without a great staff?
Bad Habitz keeps on keepin’ on and the crowd keeps coming back.

BEST ORIGINAL BAND
and
BEST COUNTRY BAND
The Dan Varner Band (Pictured)
www.danvarner.com
DVB’s entire CD “From Within” is all original and every track is radio ready. The recording quality is excellent, no super studio remix required. Tracks like “I’m Through”, “Four Vices”, “Twelve Beer Honey” and “Back Into My Life” are ready to rock the country music stations. The remaining tracks; “Yesterdays”, “She Makes Me” and “From Within” are such sweet ballads they may cause even real cowboys to shed a tear or two. The record companies could release any or all and have a hit with every last one of them. If DVB can just get a video for any track off “From Within” on CMT that will be the last we would ever see of DVB around here. Well, except at Riverbend once a year or so. Here is a perfect example of why any good band should focus on writing originals. We get so sick and tired of hearing the same lame ass “Cincy is not the place for bands to play originals” sh#t. DVB focuses solely on original music and if you go to any local show you’ll see the originals are what the crowd calls out for! Their originals are also exactly what is going to get them on the big bus brother. Just wait and see.
BEST COVER BAND
Sidewinder
www.sidewinder-band.com
In case you missed it the first time, look back at what we wrote about Sidewinder the first time we saw the show. “They look Southern, they act Southern, they talk Southern and they certainly can dish out some damn good down home Dixie rock n roll. While most bands cringe at a drunken “LYNYRD SKYNYRD” rebel yell from the crowd Sidewinder slyly smiles and embraces the Skynyrd songs as if they intended to play it next all along. What’s cool is they’ll jump all over Sublime, and Snoop just as fast as an Allman Brothers tune too...” That still holds true and you better believe they put on one hell of a show. We would call them a country band (in fact they came in a close 2nd for “Best Country Band”) however they do cover many artists and styles outside of country music. Just call them Southern Rock and they’ll be fine with that. In fact, from now on you should call them the best damn Southern Rock Band around. They deserve it.
BEST JAM BAND
Rusty Van Band
RVB is collective creativity in motion... jammin’ with a jazz soul, a Grateful Dead groove, an Ekoostic Hookah harmony, Phish phonetics, a Bob Marley bass beat and a Widespread Panic push, the Rusty Van Band’s repertoire can relax even the most tight ass white man...
That’s the way we described RVB back in Jan. 07 We still hold to these truths today. This is one band that simply doesn’t get booked enough at the better clubs. I can’t imagine why either, they play every year at the Wang Dang Doodle and draw hundreds and even thousands of RVB fans from all over the city and they have super solid originals that are the highlight of the show. Sure they cover good tunes but, the originals are where they really shine! Take heed club owners, you’ve been looking for a fresh sound from a new band to book, here it is.
BEST BLUES BAND
Sonny Moorman Group
www.sonnymoorman.com
If you have never heard Sonny up close and personal you really can’t quite understand. This cat’s one of those musicians Billy Joel was talking about when he sang “They sit at the
bar and put bread in my jar and say Man what are you doing here”. Just talking about blistering guitar riffs and smoldering solos gets Sonny hot. Even the mere mention of an awesome Allman Brothers album (yeah there used to be such a thing as albums) or a hard hitting Hendrix song gets Sonny fired up! It’s no wonder Sonny’s blood starts heat’n up because Sonny is actually able to get out his guitar and jam like Ole Greg himself, some say even better. He’s a local legend and could wallpaper his living room with the awards he’s won. Everyone voted for him in the blues category but he really shines in the original music he has put out over the years. Two words still say it all to me.. “Telegraph Road” One of the best original records to ever come out of Cincinnati, period.
It’s a freaking sin the record companies don’t spin Sonny on all the rock stations just once across the country, one shot is all he needs.
BEST 80’s BAND
The Rusty Griswolds
These guys take the top spot for cover bands. No other band even comes close to getting paid what these boys do. You won’t see them at smaller clubs because of that premium price but when you do see them you won’t be alone, you’ll be sharing the dance floor with about 300-400 other Rusty Griswold fans every time. They have the look, the sound and the set list down to an art form and when it comes to 80’s & 90’s covers nobody does it better. You can usually catch them at Rhinos once a month. The cover charge might be $7 but don’t let that fret you, it’s a good time worth the extra 2 bucks. Plus, there is always lots of lovely ladies at their shows, that’s always a good thing.
www.therustygriswolds.com
BEST METAL BAND
Livid
www.lividsounds.com
Maniac metalhead cover band. These guys started to rally a following last year at Rhinos with their head banging Bizkit-esque bashes. Then the band went on sabbatical or something and dropped off the map for a bit. Now they’re back in action again and if you missed the Nov. 26th show at Bad Habitz you can see them on Dec. 6th at Harleys Ten West in Indianapolis.
Don’t forget the earplugs and the Tylenol.
BEST SOLO ARTIST
Jason Ritchie
Sidewinder
www.sidewinder-band.com
Jason is front man, lead singer, guitar player and driver of the Winnebago from the band Sidewinder. Just like any good country act Jason can jam with or without the band. You can usually catch his unplugged solo show up at J&B’s Tavern. Solo or not it’s still a bona fide true red, white & blue southern rock show.
BEST TRIBUTE BAND
Backbeat
These boys know how to rock a gig! Had they been playing back in the day of the Partridge family, they would certainly have kicked their ass and stole their daughters. They play the Beatles like they were there and they even have that same jovial, whimsical, impromptu humor the Beatles are so famous for. It’s eerie!
Backbeat is also famous for their covers of the Rolling Stones and other great 60’s bands. They write strong originals as well, check out their CD “Story”. You can catch them Dec. 5th at K.C’s Pub
BEST MODERN ROCK BAND
Floor 13
www.myspace.com/wearefloor13
A little bit of WEBN, a little 97.3 and some 92.5 thrown in for good measure Floor 13 keeps the booties bumpin to the beats of solid rock & roll. You’ll hear barely month old monster hits one after another and just when you thought you had them figured out they’ll throw back to some Dylan or Stones cover. Everyone involved in Floor 13 seems hell bent on creating the best performance they can muster at all times. It’s as if it was their last chance on some “American Band Idol” network TV show and the crowd reaps the rewards for all their efforts.
The lead guitar player (Nick Netherton) also plays in the Dan Varner Band so Floor 13’s schedule may be sporadic from time to time. When you do see them booked you better catch the show, they are the all time favorite at J&B’s Tavern even against all the other good bands that play there.
ROWDIEST PARTY BAND
Kenny Welch Band
Kenny is pure chicken & biscuits. I bet he was even “country when country wasn’t cool.” His country sound is soaked to the bone in sausage gravy. He’d feel right at home at the Grand Ole Opry and I’m sure they’d welcome him in as if he were kin. The band keeps the country covers fresh and hot off the press. If you just heard it on the B chances are tonight at the bar you’ll be hearing it live from the KWB and most likely even louder and prouder than the original.
BEST GUITAR PLAYER
Brad Kelly
Dan Varner Band
There’s no argument that much of DVB’s original sound is due to the reverberations of Brad Kelly’s 6 string beauty.
BEST BASS PLAYER
Kris Jones
Rusty Van Band
Smooth as a prom queens thigh.
BEST DRUMMER
Pete Pemberton
Sidewinder
Sidewinder-band.com
Pemberton’s drums drive Sidewinder like a Nascar driver in four o’clock traffic... fast and dangerous, yet with precision.

BEST KEYBOARD PLAYER
Dave Faul (pictured)
Dan Varner Band
We love this guy. It’s more fun to watch Dave than it is to watch other entire bands. Truly gifted.
BEST VIOLINIST
Nick Netherton from Dan Varner Band and Floor 13
Known as a “musical genius” Nick can pick up any number of instruments and wail. He is also the lead guitar player in Floor 13. Now, he adds violin, mandolin and guitar with the boys in DVB and they’ve never sounded sweeter.
BEST SINGER
Dan Varner
The main man. Dan’s shared the stage with many greats lately but he can play all by his lonesome and the ladies will still swoon. Keep an eye on this guy, he’s got the magic.
BEST BOWLING ALLEY
Cherry Grove Lanes
4005 Hopper Hill Road 528-7888
This Beechmont bowling alley features 34 lanes with automatic scoring, 7 volleyball courts, darts, pool tables, a full kitchen, indoor & outdoor lounges and meeting rooms. They also have a popular volleyball court that’s packed in the summer.
BEST POOL HALL
House Of Billiards
624 Ohio Pike
One of the only true billiard halls left in the city is right here on the Eastside. Easily overlooked, the House of Billiards is in the plaza beside (and behind) Red Lobster and Rong Tans. Whether your looking to play some serious pool or you just want to take a twenty and show the little lady a good time you’ll want to bother to find it. The “House” (as it’s affectionately known) features National Top Line and Brunswick Gold Crown 8 & 9 foot tables. Cold beer and coolers are available at the bar. Ladies play free on Mondays, Tuesdays are 1/2 price pool from 2-7, Thursdays guys shoot 1/2 price all day and Sundays are always serious 8-ball tournaments. House of Billiards may soon stand alone as 8 out of the 11 pool halls in the city have closed due to the smoking ban. If the other two go for sale or lease that will leave The House of Billiards “the only ball on the table”. Don’t worry about the House’s future though... they have been going strong for 22 years and smoking ban be-damned the night life at the House is still alive and kicking. As an interesting side note the House of Billiards advertises “Hot & Friendly bartenders working 12 out of 14 shifts” Humm, hot and friendly, now that’s a winning combo.
BEST SUMMER FESTIVAL
Ohmstead

BEST MUSIC FESTIVAL
