BEST OVERALL BAND/
BEST ORIGINALS
The Dan Varner Band
www.danvarner.com
Dan you’ve done it again, well actually twice or is it thrice considering you won two categories this year... either way that’s a bold statement. More votes for Dan Varner came in than any other band. Now that’s saying something. Hell we think Danny & the band are awesome. No Eastside band in my recollection has came so far so fast (aside from Kenny Welch). I wonder if it’s a coincidence they both play country? I doubt it. The Dan Varner Band’s CD is in my shuffle quite often. It’s chock full of original music that sounds “radio ready”. Get your CD if you don’t have it already. Better yet check out the live show, you never know just what they’ll play. Once I heard country versions of Snoop Dogg and Neil Diamond back to back. It was awesome.

BEST COVER BAND
The Menus
www.themenus.org
My god how do I put the Menus into words?
How about “Rocky Horror Johnny Cash” or maybe “Elvis Presley... the acid years” Perhaps “A magical night with the Cars... cross-dress to impress” Fact is no matter what I say it won’t even be close. Why these boys aren’t on MTV (or at least in Vegas) I’ll never know but you just have to see it to believe it. They claim the fame of 20+ years in a row as the highest paid band in the tri-state area and still going strong. They are all pushing 40 (or 45) but every Menus “virgin” we’ve taken to the show became an instant lifelong fan (except you Jessie) so what can I tell you. Pay the 7 bucks and take the ride.

BEST JAM BAND
Rusty Van Band
www.myspace.com/rustyvanband
A band after my own heart. These boys are soo laid back they are almost upside down. This is the jam band on the Eastside. Ekoostic Hookah might be headlining Annies but this jam band doesn’t need to juggle players just to fill the bill. They stand out in the crowd as the funkiest soul groove sound in town. Singing sweet originals all night long and a few favorite covers thrown in for kicks the Rusty Van Band smokes the competition. I bet even Bob Marley would stand up and shout out “ooh ya mon ya got dat dizzy groove down pat mon” I guess it all comes back to that two joints thing. I really need to try that.

BEST BLUES BAND
Sonny Moorman Group
www.sonnymoorman.com
Calling Sonny a blues band doesn’t quite seem right to me. I know he’s famous as a blues man, he’s on the radio and tv playing deep delta acoustic blues tunes. However, I’ve seen Sonny for over a decade now and when he’s hot for rock he’s hot brother. I’ll bet my entire net worth that Sonny can “out duel” guitar with anyone alive (seriously). I’m not talking chump change either folks. My bet’s locked in because this guy can light it up right proper people. He could leave Eddie wondering “what happened” and could make Page say “how’s that go again” Clapton would simply smile and catch up and Greg Allman would just weep with joy. Sonny’s the real deal. It’s emotional, sometimes I watch him play and get teary eyed thinking “what the hell are you doing here” His songwriting is no less moving than his live show. Check out Telegraph Road it’s still my favorite. You can get his CD’s at the show. Just don’t plan on showing up and socializing much.... Sonny’s solos are captivating to say the least.

BEST COUNTRY BAND
Kenny Welch Band
www.kennywelchband.com
Ahh my favorite front porch comfort food chicken and biscuit band. If you like modern country than you’ve been missing out if you ain’t already a Kenny Welch Band fan. Kenny and the band play the latest hits and a few country standards, not to mention the originals that sealed the deal on a record contract. Regardless of what they’re playing it’s good old shit kicking country where I come from. I guess that’s why Kenny’s leaving us to go nationwide with a major record label. (sob, sob, sniffle, sniffle) No matter, I still have his CD Crank It Up and I know he’ll play the Eastside after the big Riverbend shows, besides he’s playing all December here in town and I can catch at least three more shows before they take off for stardom.
BEST 80’s BAND
The Rock Show
www.therockshow1.com
80’s hair band fans listen up, Rock Show loves the sounds you grew up with more than you do. They still live it, breathe it and play it loud! You won’t regret that Motley Crue or Poison concert you missed when you see these guys. They walk it talk it dress it sing it shout it and f#ck it. Bret may be old, bald and in the way, Tommy’s gone loopy about being a guitar player and Axle is a black balled bearded fool now but Rock Show is picking up where they all left off.
With a vengeance.

BEST SOLO ARTIST
One Man Electric Band
www.onemanelectricalband.com
You have to read the archive we have on this guy. OMEB just oozes talent. He plays every single instrument you hear and that’s saying something when he’s playing Bohemian Rhapsody or the Beatles. Part man part 500 Gb hard drive he’s a multi tasking fully functional five piece band... but you can only see the one of him. The alter egos you just get to hear. Go see it and you’ll see what I mean.

BEST TRIBUTE BAND
Backbeat
www.myspace.com/storybackbeat
Who else? Even the manager for the Beatles came to Milford to see this band. Why? because they have that 60’s Beatles thing down so pat you’d think they were related. Throw in a little Led Zeppelin & Rolling Stones for good measure and you have a rockin’ band O’boys. They even have the fab four’s sense of humor and spontaneity. It just comes natural. It’s either awesome or eerie depending on how you look at it. I usually look at it through my glass, singing at the top of my lungs along with the band. Just as you should too.

BEST MODERN ROCK
4th Day Echo
www.myspace.com/4thdayecho
Watching these guys is like listening to the best of WEBN only live. They play all the latest rock hits and a few favorites from yesteryear. Busting into AC/DC or Breaking Benjamin 4th Day Echo rocks like the real thing. It’s no wonder they keep the girls panting in their panties either. You’d think they were already rock stars they way they take the stage. If the adrenalin holds out and they don’t go bust on the bar tabs they’re certain to have a long illustrious career.
BEST METAL BAND
Livid
www.lividsounds.com
Crazy screaming smashing and slamming their way to the top of the Eastside heavy metal scene Livid has made some fans. One might suspect these boys all gather round a crack hookah moments before assaulting the stage. If you dig the dark side of rock & roll you’ll feel right at home with these maniacs and the sideshow that comes with them. I doubt the singer can speak for two days after a show and most likely the rest of the band’s in dire need of an i.v. on the way home but you have to give them credit for taking the stage by storm like a modern day blitzkrieg.

ROWDIEST PARTY BAND
Right Turn Clyde
www.myspace.com/rtclive
Read the Nov 06 archive we did on these guys. Better yet go see them. You feel like a college freshman at your first Kegger’ again when Right Turn Clyde lights up the stage. Rumor has it the band has never been stumped by a request... any request. I’ve tried stumping them with many O’tune and they pull it off and crack me up every time. Good fun. The show ranges from PG to PG-13 to Rated-R depending on the quantities of Jack Daniels consumed. This is live rock & roll the way it was always meant to be.

BEST GUITAR
Ian Ross. Ian Ross Website
We don’t have a picture of this guy because we really don’t even know who he is or where he plays. For that matter we don’t even know what kind of music he plays. However he received an overwhelming majority of votes for best guitarist so he just has to win the category. A quick internet search reveals he is from Stow Ohio, he sings, plays jazz guitar (very well apparently) and many other instruments. He’s 23 and already making quite a name for himself. Check out his December shows on the 5th & 12th at Mesh (West Chester) and the 14th & 15th at One Restaurant (Mason). We never knew we had so many online readers up north in the Mason area! Cool.

BEST BASS PLAYER
Mark Hoffman
The Sonny Moorman Group
www.sonnymoorman.com
He’s an old school bass player from Cincinnati’s all time best collaboration of blues musicians the Blues All Stars. Mark’s sound is as smooth as a prom queens thigh and just as captivating. No one digs on the fat four string like Mark. When Mark is not playing his bass he’s either teaching the bass, building a bass or a bass cabinet. He has also built one hell of reputation along the way as one of the best all time bass players that Cincy has ever produced.

BEST DRUMMER
Jamie Combs
4th Day Echo
This kid is over the top man. Now and then for no apparent reason he starts grinning, digs in and puts on a sweet & savage show that would rival Tommy Lee’s famous drum solos. He could sit in for any famous drummer and steal their job in two songs. He’s wily, smiley, wacky, weird & wild and sometimes all at the same time. Even though he has an irreverent approach to percussion his technique and style are unmatched as of yet by any other drummer in the city. Here’s the kicker... he would really rather play guitar instead! Go see the 4th Day Echo show and you’ll see him do both.
BEST KEYBOARD PLAYER
Greg Cooper
Nextime www.nextime.org
Gregg is a virtuoso on the keyboard. He can cover all the big hits from the 70’s and 80’s like he wrote them himself. Nextime keeps getting bigger and bigger and we think that Gregg is one reason why. His sound is big & bold and his keys are never cold. Rock on.
BEST SINGER
Dan Varner
Dan won this hands down. His song From Within showcases Dan’s talent perfectly not to mention Four Vices off the same CD. His sound is pure country without the overbearing Tennessee twang.
