Jammin’ with Bad Habit

Bad Habit recently joined our band page. I keep a close eye on new bands to the site and if they are new to me I try to catch a show and write an article (if they merit it). I could have sworn I’ve seen Bad Habit. This month while at Pirates Den I watched these guys jam. Turns out I have not seen them before. After the first song I was certain that if I had, I would have remembered.
I liked the set list right off. Don’t Stop Believing, Crazy Train, Foreplay/Longtime, plus Helter Skelter and Live Wire from Motley Crue just to name a few. High energy rock & roll all throughout the night. Many bands start off slow and wind up. These guys came out on the first set guitars blazing. No waiting around for the kick ass to kick in, it comes on fast, hard and first.
Bad Habit is 20 years old this year. So if the band is 20, obviously the musicians are older than most of the crowd. These guys aren’t pierced rock punks with tribal tattoos, they are solid pro players with experience and expertise. Think about that... 20 years making the bills by making music. Damn fine way to get by.
The energy the band projects can best be described as “classic arena rock”. A straight 70’s cocaine fueled Boston vibe (not that I imply Bad Habit has anything to do with drugs, they all seemed quite sober to me). It’s part of the showmanship, part of the feel that surrounds them. They know you’re there to party, and they’re there to see to it that happens. Good vibe.
Unlike the band, Bad Habit’s site lacks much, such as the band member names, the audio, and video (there are youtube videos). That’s too bad too, because now I have no idea who is who or who plays what. I can say this though... the lead singer/ guitar player couldn’t have done better, vocals, licks, solos etc. The rhythm guitar player back up singer stole his share of the spotlight too with great vocals and guitar work. The bass player drove the music with power. He looked like he wasn’t even trying. The drummer balanced grace and great power with talent and technical prowess. The keyboard player shined strong on Boston tunes and the like. His back up vocals added depth and harmony. I would like to see him cut loose on his keys without the constraints of playing rock. Across the board, they all rock solid. Great vocals in this band. I would love to hear them tear into an Allman Bros tune. Few can do that proper. It’s low key for their style but it just sticks in my mind.
In February you can only the see the band at The Knotty Pine (17th & 18th). We love the Pine and that’s a great place to see them so punch it in on your phone, write it on your bathroom wall, key it on your neighbor’s car or do whatever you have to do to remember.
